Fox News: Young women belong on Tinder, not in voting booth

When our writer waddles his way over to the local gym, he inevitably ends up being stuck on the treadmill that’s right in front of the TV that has Fox News on it. Some days, he’s mercifully lucky and the closed captioning isn’t working so he doesn’t know what’s being said. This week, he was not so lucky, and he saw words pop up on the screen he couldn’t believe. Here’s the full clip for those of you who didn’t have the “pleasure” of watching it live:

Yeah, we really can’t believe it either. Kimberly Guilfoyle literally says the following in discussing why young women shouldn’t vote: “It’s the same reason why young women on juries are not a good idea. They don’t get it. They’re not in that same like life experience of paying the bills, doing the mortgage, kids, community, crime, education, health care. They’re like healthy and hot and running around without a care in the world.” When another commentator tries to point out what a God-awful idea that is, she responds by saying, “I’m just saying excuse them [from jury duty] so they can go back on Tinder.”

Let’s break down this failure piece by piece. The segment starts out with a different talking head complaining about how younger people tend to vote for Democrats. That’s very true. Those of us below the age of 30 don’t vote at a high rate (especially in midterm elections), but we do tend to vote more liberal. That talking head makes the false equivalency that with age comes wisdom, and that young people shouldn’t wait to grow older to vote Republican. This is where Guilfoyle chimes in for the first time and says you don’t have to wait “to get a brain”. So all liberals are brainless morons. Got it.

Next, let’s take a look at Guilfoyle’s requirements for women to vote:

  • Can’t be “young”
  • Has to pay bills
  • Needs to own a home
  • Must have kids

There’s more, but after that she just starts spouting conservative buzzwords and her terrible argument becomes a senseless rant.

So all women who don’t plan to have children? Can’t vote. Own an apartment instead of a home? Can’t vote. Under the age of 30 (or whatever her definition of young is)? Can’t vote. Essentially, you have to be a land-owning affluent and aged female in order to be accepted at the poling places, in Guilfoyle’s eyes.

The most staggering thing about this argument is that Ms. Guilfoyle is not just a talking head with no sense of the law. She studied the legal system in her undergrad and earned her J.D. from the San Francisco School of Law. She served as a prosecutor in San Fransisco, a deputy DA in Los Angeles, and an assistant DA back in Frisco. This is a person who tried a murder case that got international headlines saying that young women shouldn’t serve on juries. Think about that.

What’s the real reason for Guilfoyle’s restrictions? Well, if only those women were allowed to vote, then the only votes cast would be for conservative candidates. And why have fair and open elections when you can just silence the voices you don’t want to listen to instead?

Perhaps Guilfoyle’s most comical error is her categorization of young women as “healthy and hot and running around without a care in the world.” She also insinuates that young women don’t have to worry about paying bills or aren’t interested in helping out their community. Our writer isn’t a young woman, but he’s guessing that a lot of women ages 18-30 do have to worry about paying bills. They don’t live a care-free lifestyle and have plenty of things they’re concerned about. And they are invested in improving their communities.

If you’re offended by this, you should be. Guilfoyle is basically saying if you don’t agree with me, don’t vote. It’s a Fox News mantra that’s wrong on so many levels. As the midterm elections approach, if you really want to get back at Ms. Guilfoyle, showing up to the polls is the best way to do so.
